How can a member be "away" if they are logged on to the forum?

it's just a tool to let people know if you are actually 'away' and give a reason. but some people use it to be amusing and some use it to complain about stuff, including moderation. but it's just for information only, it doesn't have any other function.

Quite an existential question this early in the night.
The prosaic answer I'd suggest is that the status doesn't change automatically, so if you forget to go back into your profile and reset it then it will just keep displaying what you last set.
