I read somewhere that Ben Dover; aka Steve Perry; aka other names; has been doing this for years.... Claiming copyright infringement, and sadly the law sometimes lets him get info he really shouldn't be able to get about people... I can see his side of it in some way, but its still petty if we're talking one petty download; as opposed to thousands, or something worth his while..

He's clearly not rich enough to retire just yet, or greedy...? I'll leave it up to your individual discretion to decide which....

https://torrentfreak.com/ip-address-not-person-140324/ check this out mate. it may give you an idea as to how to reply to this legalese trolling...
theres also the fact that geo location data bases, are out of date 99.9% of the time.

just write them back and tell them you are the account holder but you didnt personally download anything. as said in the above article theres no way for them to personally identify the person who downloaded any file.
all they can do is tie the ip to the address not the person.

fact is im suprised your ip even gave out your details for this.. they know its trolling.

Do a search on torrentfreak, there have been a few articles about Sky and the copyright trolls.

I vaguely recall one case where Sky went to court to try not to give customer details, but lost. They went on to send letters to those customers affected, informing them that they had been forced to give their details over and consequently they would likely be getting a letter soon demanding some sort of payment for the 'infringement'. The letter as near as damn it said to just ignore the demand as there was nothing the other party could do.

The general advice in these cases is ignore, ignore, ignore. As soon as you respond, you give them a glimmer of hope that they might be able to pressure you into giving them a few bob. They will try to hit you with all manner of legalise about you being liable even if it was actually someone else using your connection, they will try to threaten you with court action in the hope you will agree to a settlement instead. Just ignore, the onus is on them to prove YOU did something, the ip address is no proof at all.

EDIT : I should point out that others advise to send a letter of denial, and if they follow up hassling you for more information, send a further letter of denial, and if they follow up again, stop communicating with them and take it to the ombudsman.
There is advice along those lines, along with relevant links at the address Hexit linked to above.

Realistically, they can't disobey a court order.

while technically correct mate. bt are well known for selling there customers details... they may have just said court order to cover there asses when they found out what these guys are doing.
which if you read the articles linked on the other links. you will see happens more than you would like to think.
(selling of details that is)
