The London strip pub scene - marlowe - 25-08-2016 11:47

I’ve started this thread for two reasons. Firstly because a very interesting post by Kevin555 in the Soho thread shows how much scope there is for discussing the London strip scene outside of Soho, and secondly because I’d been thinking that London’s strip pubs deserve to have a thread of their own anyway, especially with many of them having closed now. Putting these two things together I felt that a thread on the history of London strip pubs would surely generate some interesting contributions and prove to be very worthwhile.

To get this thread going I’m wondering if I should attempt to make a list of strip pubs I’ve visited. Several of them I have only ever been in once, but even so I've got a good memory and I should be able to recall them all.

Go for it elgar! I gather from what you say that it could end up being quite a long list, but give it a go anyway. Cool

Here we are then. The list really isn't that long to be honest.

Acorn - Queensbridge Rd
Browns (Horns) - Hackney Rd
Chelsea Reach - Battersea Park Rd
Crosby Head - Old St
Flying Scotsman - Caledonian Rd
Green Gate - Bethnal Green Rd
Green Man - Stratford High St
Jack The Ripper (Ten Bells) - Commercial St
Lord Nelson - Mora St
Metropolis (Arabian Arms) - Cambridge Heath Rd
Nags Head - Whitechapel Rd
Norfolk Village - Shoreditch High St
Penny Farthing (Spread Eagle) - Kingsland Rd
Queen Anne - Vauxhall Walk
Rainbow Sports Bar (Bull and Pump) - Shoreditch High St
Samuel Pepys - Mare St
Seven Stars - Brick Lane
White Horse - Cambridge Heath Rd
White Horse - Shoreditch High St
Ye Olde Axe - Hackney Rd

With the recent closures of the Flying Scotsman and the White Horse it looks like only 5 of your list are still active as strip pubs.

Most of the list I'd only been to once or very rarely anyway. This is my core list, i.e. those visited often. Of these 8 there are 4 still in business.

Browns (1 Hackney Rd)
Metropolis (234 Cambridge Heath Rd)
Nags Head (17-19 Whitechapel Rd)
Rainbow Sports Bar (72 Shoreditch High St)

Green Gate (230 Bethnal Green Rd) - now a retail shop
Lord Nelson (17 Mora St) - now a block of flats
Queen Anne (139 Vauxhall Walk) - now Tea House Theatre
White Horse (64 Shoreditch High St) - being redeveloped

Hi
On the thread one pub was Ye Olde Axe does anyione know if it is still going

I went to the Axe a couple of months ago, the first week in July. Most of the girls seemed to be Romanian and in my humble opinion not quite up to the Browns-Griffin-Horns standard, but as a pub I like the Axe better than those other places and overall find it a better experience.
