I remember him more from Space 1999 RIP to a fine actor & I'm pretty sure space 1999 was a spin off from another series, but I can't remember which one

Not quite a spin-off mate. It was made instead of season 2 of Gerry Anderson's UFO. It used their money, basic plot ideas (moon and its station being blasted out of orbit) and some of the former's production personnel IIRC.

I knew it had connections to UFO I am sure Martin's character could be loosely based on Straker from UFO

An excellent, versatile actor. As I like the films of Woody Allen and Alfred Hitchcock, I tend to remember Crimes And Misdemeanours & North By Northwest
