As a cancer survivor myself it's always sad to hear of other people who have not been as lucky. Forty is too young. My thoughts go out to her family at this sad time. RIP

I listened to Rachael many times on 5 live. She was a bubbly yet assured and composed presenter and newsreader.
Her battle with cancer and most notably her blogging on the issue as well as the podcasts she jointly engaged in helped open up frank areas of discussion.
These podcasts were jointly hosted by fellow sufferers of the 'Big C'.
I heard the other day that one of the other co-presenters of the podcast had a conversation with Rachael in which the idea was mooted in jocular fashion that in the event they both died at the same time whether there could be 2 funerals for the price of one.
Only they could get away with joking about it in the face of their plight and it is much to their credit they could find humour in something so terribly sad.
Rachael's overriding concern in preparing for her passing was for husband Steve and very young son Freddie and how they would cope with her loss. So much so she bought a birthday present for Freddie for every year until he reaches the age of 21.
Freddie is currently 3 years old.
It speaks volumes for the selfless person Rachael seemed to be and I feel all the more sad for that fact.
May you rest in peace Rachael.
May your spirit forever live on.
And may Freddie and Steve forever make you proud looking down from above.
R.I.P.

Rachel's lasting legacy will be how we now have that discussion on cancer, her blogs and podcast have firmly kicked open that door, and we should be more open on the discussions on cancer because of her. She has probably swept the taboo on cancer into touch
