Acclaimed novelist and screenwriter William Goldman has passed away aged 87.He worked on big films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The President's Men as well as adapting scripts based on his own novels that included Magic and The Princess Bride.

He was a great writer and wrote an outstanding script for one of my favourite films Marathon Man.

His memoir "Adventures in the Screen Trade" is well worth the read and has fascinating stories about working on A Bridge Too Far, The Stepford Wives and many others. His oft-quoted maxim about the film business - "nobody knows anything" - is a fitting phrase for our times (and possibly all times).
