Great goalkeeper RIP Kept goal in the 1970 WC quarter final against W Germany in place of Gordon Banks

A very good keeper who had the unenviable task of following the great Gordon Banks.

RIP Peter

Great keeper, if he hadn't been a contempory of Gordon Banks and then Peter Shilton he would have been the England 1st choice.

He was an excellent keeper.
In another era I suspect he would have had more appearances for England. R.I.P

3 things to know about Peter Bonetti.

Pelé said he was one of the 3 greatest goalkeepers he had ever seen (the others were Gordon Banks and Lev Yashin).

He was runner-up in the Footballer Of The Year award for 1969/70 (the winner that season was Billy Bremner).

He played 729 times for Chelsea - the second most by a goalkeeper for any one English club (after Alan Knight of Portsmouth).
