Gods of Snooker - Doddle - 04-05-2021 07:01 New BBC series starting next weekend, which has been trailed for weeks (with a crap title). Thrill as Mark Allen loses his rag over yet another "the good old days" series RE: Gods of Snooker - Snooks - 04-05-2021 07:30 I enjoyed the good old days. Characters like Big Bill Werbenuik, The Great WT (RIP), Eddie Charlton (RIP), Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins (RIP), Cliff Wilson (RIP), Tony Meo etc. The sport is different now. A winning machine mentality has taken over as the stakes have got higher and prize money gone through the roof. I miss the old days. Nostalgic old fool snooks . I always feel Snooker came into our households when Pot Black was on, and really do think that should be revived just to give youngster or new professional a chance for TV exposure. Waited until all 3 before starting. Watched the additional repeats first, which seemed a bit odd in retrospect - you see poor Clive Everton in 2021 going "I watched every ball of the 1972 final blah blah", and then an hour later, Clive Everton in 2010 going "I watched every ball of the 1972 final blah blah". Clive looks in a frail state Then there's Tony Knowles, who would seem a more surprising inclusion if not for seeing him at the World Seniors, thus making him look like someone raising his profile again at every chance. If there's anyone who I bet has been asked "Didn't you used to be..?" it's Tony Knowles. I know they have to make these things fairly generalised for whom the public knows, but surely there'd be something in the story of John Spencer or Doug Mountjoy or even *shudder* John Virgo. I suppose those sorts of things are what podcasts are for. RE: Gods of Snooker - Doddle - 28-05-2021 20:42 One of my fave bits was at Alex Higgins' infamous 1990 "retirement" press conference when he slags off the snooker business by comparing it to tripe, before instantly apologising to Northern people who might like tripe Of all the many things he could have apologised for... it's like a reflex reaction to prove he's not slagging off tripe. |
