Porn sites and cryptocurrencies - get in the van - 03-02-2022 00:55

I've notice more and more porn sites are accepting payment in cryptocurrencies. Is this just down to the growing popularity of crypto or is there something more behind it? And would paying in crypto be a good move?

Some porn sites no doubt regard crypto payments as the way to go as it would free them from the recent Mastercard rules, and in general allow them to operate independently of credit card companies and banks. But this would only work if every single customer paid in crypto and they weren't taking credit cards at all, which is an unlikely scenario except where the credit card companies have already withdrawn their services.

More likely, the reason that crypto payments are becoming more popular on adult sites is that many such sites are simply offering an alternative payment option for those certain people who are worried about putting their credit card details into a porn site and how the transaction will appear on their credit card bill. In other words, the anonymous nature of making a payment in cryptocurrency is bound to appeal to some people.

Porn transactions on credit card bills usually appear as something mundane or even obscure such as First Billing Inc, although I'm sure some people still have concerns about these things. Anyway for whatever reason there are not only an increasing number of porn sites which take payment in cryptocurrencies, but also an increasing number of cryptocurrencies specifically for making payments on porn sites, such as cumrocket, vit (vice industry token), wankcoin, btad (bitcoin adult) and the splendidly named simp.

If you're already holding bitcoin or another crypto then yes why not. But I wouldn't recommend buying crytocurrency solely to pay for some credits on a porn site, unless of course you're hugely concerned about privacy, as these cryptos are known to be volatile plus transaction fees apply.

What would be interesting is if a porn site wanted to move away from credit cards and so decided to offer a better deal for crypto payments. In other words, there was a financial incentive to pay using a cryptocurrency, bonus credits or something. That might prove to be a gamechanger.

I just thought I'd mention that you don't need to get involved with crypto to make an anonymous payment. There are several other methods that achieve the same thing, and are becoming widely accepted, such as a prepaid debit card, a gift card or a paysafe voucher.

Another adult crypto just launching is Bitcci. It's being introduced with some fanfare and ambition, aiming to revolutionise the sex industry, but we'll see how it goes in practice. The sales pitch for it is very glitzy and it sounds very big business and has £5m invested in it after only 3 weeks of being on the market.

It's also the case that more and more sites are MAKING payments in cryptocurrencies (to creators and webcammers).

Wyre, a major cyptocurrency payment processor, has just announced that it will no longer process payments for adult websites. I never thought something like that would happen with crypto.

It's a real plot twist. Since crypto is supposed to be the thing that frees the adult industry from reliance on credit card companies and banks it's a really curious development.
