What news channels that can be bothered to cover his death are dubbing him an OFAH actor, which is surely damning with faint praise for the star of Nicholas and bloody Alexandra, not to mention a major role in the telly version of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and also A Bit of a Do, Cluedo and even Dr Who.

He was a very versatile character actor who I can remember in many different shows over the last 49 years.
