Like Dave Myers, he'd been pretty delicate over the years - a wonder he spun his way to 79. I listened to his drivetime work a fair few times back in the day, so I think of him with fondness, whether he got up to some lively larks IRL.

When I take a look back Steve's passing it was so sudden when it happened right out of the blue and quite agree it iis pretty much an end of an era
Radio 2 probably feels the loss more than anyone & I'm sure over the next few day there will be many DJ's who knew him will pay tribute to Johnnnie's contribution. And when you think back then radio was just as important an entertainment outlet as TV, but it was the way the DJ's did it in a unique way that made it enjoyable to listen to.

I think the most important thing about Johnnie Walker was his philosophy (presumably from his producers on the pirate stations) that on air he should play one from the playlist and then one not on the playlist.
Currently, they are so entrenched that a broadcaster thinks to concoct a feature where a prize is given if a song is played twice in a day. At the same time the industry appears so unimaginative at identifying fresh talent.

Johnnie outlived Stuart but both sadly missed

Very sad news.
Not only did he play great music, but his old "fun at one" spot was always something to look forward to, usually featuring the likes of Bob Newhart or Pete and Dud.
