He will always be the GOAT. In the era before replies he got more decision correct than anyone else. (in my view whilst watching on TV).

Everyone remembers him as an umpire but before that he was a right handed batsman in a talented Yorkshire team, before having to retire at 31 will a knee injury.

I know he's had a long & wonderful life but this is really sad.

I'd like to post something really fitting & deserving of the great Yorkshireman, but don't feel capable of doing him justice right now given how emotional I feel.

It wont feel the same for a while attending a Yorkshire match, he has almost been ever present. Tears will be shed tomorrow at Headingley, not just sadness, but also happy memories.

I feel blessed to have had a number of encounters over the years, some quite random & funny. He was always warm & friendly, & his passion for the game & in particular Yorkshire shone through. I will cherish those priceless conversations with a wonderful engaging & entertaining man.

RIP Dickie

Cricket Legend, Man of the People, Proud Yorkshireman

Probably greatest ever Umpire in the history of cricket - cricket was always a good TV watch when he umpired.
I think I read both his autobiographies (I'm sure there is more than one!) & my admiration for him more went up when he turned down World Series Cricket at the time.
He was honest and players respected him whether at county or international (Test & ODI) level.
I'd certainly would put Dickie on the same level as Nigel Owens in terms of being respected sports official.
I still remember the incident with the Sunshine (he didn't look happy about it I recall) I think it was between England & West Indies but not sure which year and was it at the Oval with The prudential Office that was near there?
Thank you Dickie Bird for your brilliant umpiring & making cricket enjoyable.
RIP

Quite simply the best cricket umpire of all time. And very witty in his demeanour to boot.

A thoroughly decent bloke with a cheeky smile to disarm even the most volatile of situations Wink.

I did secretly love it though when he got in a huff about anything.
Always gave me a good giggle laugh.

R.I.P to a legend.
