RAM Advice

Looking to build a new desktop, this one is 10 years old and starting to show it`s age. Done well, quad core 9600 cpu with 8gig ddr3 ram etc, but time to upgrade.
Going top end i5, SSD decent graphics card and all that, but getting a bit stuck on the RAM.
Don`t know whether to go 32gig DDR3 or 16gig DDR4. Costs are similar. Done the ggogle thing and some say one, some say the other. I`m swaying to the DDR4 option, but keep thinking the DDR3 is the way to go.
No gaming, PC mostly used for video work and general day to day stuff, accounting, spreadsheets etc, so wondering what thoughts you kind folk might have on which way to go.

surely the ram is dependant on the motherboard you use ?

I would go for DDR4 mainly for the higher clock speeds especially when used in conjunction with a SSD. i still use DDR3 cos im still on old AMD motherboards and 6 and 4 core chips. also ddr4 is better for upgrading in the future

Seeing you have used amd in the past have you thought about Ryzen 5 instead of the I5 ?

It`s an intel CPU I`ve got, Core 2 quad 9650 and it`s been superb. I`ve got a Silverstone case with 3 x 140mm fans and a 200mm fan, with an antec CPU cooler that also has a 140mm fan. Virtually silent and it`s never gone above 32c temp, even after 10+ years of constant useage, hence wanting to stick with intel.
Looking at either Asus or Gigabyte motherboard, both will take 32gig DDR4 RAM up to 2666, but 32gig DDR4 is both out of my budget and overkill for what I do, so 16gig would be more than enough.
Good point about the DDR4 with using an SSD for the OS, never thought of that, but doing a search, supports what you say, so descision made.
