I think that most people would consider volunteering to spend 2 years abroad helping disadvantaged people to be a real job, just because your getting paid for something it does not mean you have a real job, just look at westminster if you need proof of that.

After last nights vote on the welfare bill, labour had better elect a new leader pronto.

^It seemed that 48 Labour MP's voted against it. In defiance of Harriet Harmen, who said.

'it was important for the party to abstain on the bill as a whole to show that it understood public concerns about the high cost of welfare spending.'

They have the cheek to call themselves the Labour Party.

Think you find they are the party of workers hence the name Labour party not the party of welfare unless there want to rename themselves the Shirkers Party

want to ask all you lefties a question. if we have one of the highest rates of pay in the EU (will be the best Minimum wage in 2020 when it goes to £9 an hour )and we have the 2nd best economy in the EU region behind the germans. why do we have so many people needing top up benefits yet most EU countrys dont have top up benefits and they seem to manage ok

you cant get away from the fact that labour were in power 13 years of the last 20 they could have changed things for the better and they didnt thats why they are getting punished

Like ive said before voted tory for the 1st time in May because least i know they are cunts and not surprised when they stab you in the back but they always leave the economy in a better condition when they leave office than when they come in.

The UK has 1% of the worlds population but spends 7% of the worlds benefits this is because when labour were in power they spent money like water in a cynical effort to buy votes. They thought that if they could import enough immigrants (80% of whom always vote labour) and make it so that people would be better off on benefits than they would in work, they would guarantee themselves a majority government every time.

^First of all Labour wasn't in power, New Labour was. There is a difference.

I also disagree about having the 2nd best economy. If you look at the real economy and not the artificially inflated one presented by the addition of the finance industry, then we are further down the list.

In answer to your question about top up benefits. 'New Labour', created the tax credit system which allowed Uk businesses to get away with paying crap wages for years, knowing that the government would foot the bill. This then gave businesses a level of profits which belied the reality of the economic conditions at the time. New Labour were then able gloat on about growth in the economy.

your right about the economy cut of manufacturing but labour destroyed manufacturing in the UK ok tories started the decline but it manufacturing declined faster under labour than the tories

^Ask those in the Labout party whether there is a difference between New Labour and Labour. The answer you would get is yes. New labour being centrist and Labour being on the left of politics.

This is why a lot of people consider Tony Blair to be the ideological son of Thatcher. When asked what her greatest legacy was, Margaret Thatcher was supposed to have replied 'New Labour.'

Will agree with you about manufacturing decline in this country which has been going on for a long time.

Unfortunately the two main parties at the moment occupy a somewhat centre ground of policy and political stance, with only slight differences between them.

Lets be clear here Labour under Blair won three elections so he must have been doing something right. He got a bad rap on the Iraq war, would any other political leader in situ have not supported the US President at the time?

Labour did not spend blindly all the money we had. They had to address the worse economic global crisis in a hundred years and in fact led the global template to prevent a financial services breakdown.

Now where have they gone wrong. Labour is a party with two distinct sides. that leftist side which is only focused on the " blue collar" union members and unemployed and those on minimum wage and those who are doing a little bit better who are professionals but believe in progressive socialism.

New Labour tried to address the fact that the core support was much wider than its traditional created way back in the industrial revolution under Kier Hardy but also recognised the fact you could be a £50k a year home owner with a new car on the drive and still want to support a Labour that provides opportunity for all while supporting the young and the old, the sick and the poor.

This was totally lost under Milliband. Labour should have been able to force a competition for a hung parliament even without the support of Scotland. Scottish Mp's in Labour are gone now probably for good so they have to change.

None of the leadership contenders have the imagination for this change but I don't think it will be such a bad thing for a woman to lead this party different approach and may appeal to a wider audience. So I would vote for Cooper. If Corbyn gets in Labour are well and truly unelectable more so than now.

ps. The decline in manufacturing looks like a steady decline from 1970 but for a few blips I count just as many Conservative governments in there as well as Labour!!
