What a finish we have in store tomorrow! Can't even give an advantage at this stage, except to say that NZ need 1 more wicket to more - or - less rap it up! Easier said than done, and the new ball is still some way off.

One question though? What planet was Stokesy on?? - particularly having survived a no - ball dismissal! Worked hard for a meaningful - perhaps telling - partnership with Root, and then that! It is all very well counter attacking, and showing signs of this 'brave new world' England are apparently entering, but there is a time and place. With the lower order that England have at the moment (in this match at least and with injuries for some time perhaps) this was not it! '05 here we go again!

What were the odds of a repeat of the 'ricochet' incident from the world cup happening again?? It was not lost on any of the players as it immediately sprung to mind!Wink Exactly the same end too wasn't it??

The new ball has been the big issue in this match. It's moved and seamed when new and has become very placid after about 25 overs.

Which should be an advantage to England, but early morning conditions can also cause movement of the ball.

Stokes looked like he was playing a limited over match. He was dancing down the wicket, hitting over the top, and then he tried the illfated ramp.

I still can't understand why we didn't play either an extra batsman or an allrounder instead of Parkinson.

^The new ball in my opinion should always be a major influence, particularly in the early morning conditions, but throughout! If an ICC edict is not going to go out to the boards to create pitches for the good of the sporting contest, then I would reduce the overs between new balls from the current 80 to say 60! That would mean that the contest would always be live, and there would still be room for spinners to ply their trade with a sufficient number of overs to bowl. In fact, a pitch that offers a bit more would be of benefit to spinners!

I think - as I said - Stokes was trying to impose himself on the bowling. Against the NZ spinner then ok, but not - come what may - against Jamieson. I accept the ball got big on him, but he had time to let it go, but went through with the ramp which was not there as an option. Got to pick his moments given the tail England have. Foakes is who you would want with Root in the morning instead of any of those coming behind him, but he or Root go early, and it is lights out.

Just as a bit of a segway, how much like Steve Kirby does Matt Parkinson look like , or is it just me that sees that??

^^ I think Matt looks a lot more like his twin Callum. Wink
Kirby's more ginger Huh & bowls faster Important but yes there's a slight facial resemblance.

I’m more concerned with the other batsmen that Stokes. His counter attack gave us impetus, I think Jamieson is a great bowler and it was a good ball.

Lees not knowing where his off stump is, that bothers me far more.

Crawley has talent but is giving me far too many James Vince Vibes! And Pope at 3 when he hasn’t played there at all for Surrey seems to be setting him up to fail!

Root is class and hopefully him and Foakes can steer us home. I’d send Broad in next, he’s going to swing the bat so if needed maybe he can middle a couple.

I hate injustice and liars

Somewhat brainless from both Bairstow & Stokes taking risks against the most threatening bowler, yes Boult & Southee are class but at 6 foot 8, Jamieson poses an extra threat with some invariable bounce.

Not just hindsight, but Lords does very little for the spinners. Overton could've played, or Brook who can also bowl useful medium pace.
Even more surprising that the Kiwi's picked Patel who they dropped after taking 10 wickets in an innings against India.

Current score 248 - 5, Root on 92 runs.

29 to win. 2nd new ball due in 6 overs.
England want the match over before the new ball is available.

England win by 5 wkts
279-5.
Great test, went back and forth.
Personally, I prefer these kinds of matches to the ones where the teams are getting 500 runs and hardly any wickets falling.

A great win for England (hopefully it happened before the 2nd new ball was due)

It sets the summer up for a great close series (hopeful too)

RE: England v New Zealand Test Series 2022
Well done to England in pulling back the match.

When the second innings was going bad on the loss of the 4th wicket.
Stokes joined Root out in the crease. One of them had to score a century, one of the had to score a half century and Foakes had to make a contribution. And they did just that.

And the fans get to watch for free as it ended before the 15th over.
