It was not a definite penalty. He had to use his arms as leverage and it hit him on the arm. If the ref had not awarded the penalty would the french players have held it against him? Most likely not. It was controversial either way. I personally thought the defender gets the benefit of the doubt. Howard Webb in the times said"it is not clearcut, but I can support Nicola Rizzoli's decision to award the penalty. The ball came off Patrice Evra's head on to the hand of Bastian Scweinsteiger, which makes it harsh. But the German takes a risk putting his hand towards an opponents head"

If it the penalty had not been awarded don't think people would have blamed the ref. Handball is a very grey area. For me If the person gets an unfair advantage regardless if their Is no intent by the Defender than the opposing team should be penalised. Maybe an indirect free kick. Evan than there still would be controversies.

Now that we only have the final to come we can review the tournament, and overall I don't think it's been that great. There have been some good stories with Iceland and Wales doing so well, but I don't think there have been many really gripping matches.

What do we think was the best match? Possibly Hungary-Portugal? I'd nominate Croatia-Portugal as the worst.

Anyway it's good to know that Howard Webb supports the decision to award a penalty.

Evra's got his arm out. He was also about to jump. If you are Looking to prove a point I suggest you show the film of it.

Webb also said it was not clear cut. My main point was that the penalty was controversial. Not really disproven my point with the pic and the Webb reference.

I have to agree that at times the standard wasn't what I expected from 24 of Europe's best footballing Nations and at times some of it probably has been less than what probably the TV companies also expected. Agreed there have been some good stories with Iceland and Wales doing so well thus proving, that some less than normal nations upset the odd giant but I also agree there have been many really gripping matches.
Possibly Hungary-Portugal I'd agree, but I think was about the best game there was for sheer entertainment value I'd have to nominate England V Iceland as the worst.
