Malaysian Airlines plane "shot down" over Ukraine

Ukraine's security service says it captured 10 Russian paratroopers near Dzerkalne, a village 50km from the rebel-held city of Donetsk and about 20km from the Russian border. The Russian government claims that the soldiers must have crossed the border into Ukraine by accident.

The preliminary report from the MH17 crash investigators is due to be published next Tuesday.

Flight MH17 broke up in mid-air as a result of structural damage caused by “a large number of high-energy objects that penetrated the aircraft from outside “ according to the Dutch investigators preliminary report.

The black boxes were recovered intact but the flight recorders show a completely normal flight before impact. There are no signs of any technical fault and no signs of any error by the crew.

The report concludes that the cause of the crash was entirely external and the damage caused by the external force resulted in a loss of structural integrity of the aircraft, leading to an in-flight break up.
