Depends really. With some of the hybrid bikes you can save by having less. For example my bike has no suspension and no gears. But it has a really decent frame. So it is light and relatively cheap compared to some other hybrids, especially other Scott bikes in that range. You can get half decent hybrid bikes for about £200. You spend much less it won't be worth your cash. The idea of them is they are light and easy to get around in towns etc...

Mountain bikes are more common therefore will be cheaper to buy. However you can spend a fortune on parts to replace the cheap parts you got on your mountain bike, if that makes sense? So in a way you spend more then you save by buying a cheap mountain bike. Also to really get the benefits of a mountain bike you need to be doing a lot of off roading. Like Paul Ducky mentioned in his posts, off road trailing. Ideal for mountain bikes as that is where the suspension comes into it's own. Again that is where spending a little bit more will serve you better long term.

You will never feel the benefit of suspension on main roads unless it is full of pot holes. It will only serve to soak up your energy. Add to that the tyres on mountain bikes will only serve to slow you down on the roads as well. Thinner slicker tyres will increase your speed massively without the need to put so much energy into it.

Slowly building up my fitness. I was finding it tough with the single speed but a few ride outs this week and Im loving it. Tough on the hills and tough on the legs but a real work out.
A decent way to let off some steam after work.

i havnt rode my bike this week because i messed my leg up on sunday, i went paintballing and pulled somthing in my thigh and i can hardley walk, so its the bus to work at the moment which is annoying

Ugh, public transport! I would be pissed off at having to get a bus as well. How many miles is work from home for you, LODOS ?

EDIT: i googled the distance and its 4.9 miles i was almost right

That's a perfect distance really to cycle to and from work. No wonder you enjoy it so much Is it mainly flat, or up/down hill ?

its got everything really big hills up and down nice flat straits and some dodgey corners. what about you?
