I think Bayern have gotta be favourite's now, Barca haven't looked the same team without Vilanova, so I'm doubtful they'll do a job on Milan.

just showed on sky sports similar challenges in europe and in the prem have been sent off for the same thing. just dont put ur feet up high and go with ur head instead then u cant get sent off for that, unless u do a zidane.

I'm not really a football fan, so can anyone explain to me why the Nani offence wouldn't have been a red card? The way I see it both feet leave the ground and it's a dangerously high boot with studs showing? When the same thing happened in the World Cup final everyone said Howard Webb should have given a red card.

This is why I say it wasn't a bad decision, by the letter of the law, it probably is a red card. As you say people said De Jong should’ve got sent off, United fans themselves were calling for Torres to be sent off for a similar challenge vs. Cleverley earlier this season

But I don't think these are fair comparisons, this is probably the closest:

Although Cole also got sent off, the card got rescinded, which shows the FA thought it was the wrong decision also. Basically the difference for me is all Nani (and Cole) was guilty of is trying to control the ball, whereas the two examples above were reckless ways of trying to win the ball (if that makes sense), anyone who's played football themselves should recognise that, unless they're biassed against United

im sure iv seen instances where overhead kicks have been penalised as well. all the player is trying to do is score but if the foot is high and another player is close when the overhead kick is attempted then the ref will probably blow for a free kick.

Fair point, but I'm not denying it wasn't a foul (and possibly a yellow), just not a red. And I'm pretty sure I've never seen anyone sent off for a bicycle kick Wink

RE: Champions League 2012/2013 Thread
Let's see how the rest of the last 16 pans out and then it'll be easier to make a prediction on who's going forwards. I believe that teams from the same country will be able to be drawn against each other after the last 16, is that the case? If so then its probably odds on that two German sides would be paired. At the moment I'm seeing a winner come from Bayern, Juventus or Real but we don't know until alls done in this round. Depends on the draw.

On the red card for Nani - many are villifying the referee but really he had no choice. By the letter of the law he had to give the red card otherwise its his neck on the line from the bosses at the top. Its the bosses who run the game that don't give the referees any room to use common sense that are to blame. Having said that, terrific goal from Modric. I think Rooney should have played from the start too. He could have still played and United could still have successfully employed a defensive strategy. RVP looked a little bit lost and isolated on his own up front, really ineffective. United fans will be heartened from Vidic's return though - outstanding defender. He was a rock when the sides number were even.

I have heard a rumour a while ago that Rooney may be on his way this summer. Never know perhaps some truth in that with the new rumour of Ronaldo returning Wink
Whatever, Colleen sent out vitriolic tweets about him being omitted so cue the old hairdryer treatment from Fergie lol

The similarities with Beckham not starting in 2003 and then he left 3 months later are uncanny aren't they.. Wink

I can't believe how idiotic some people get. You have to think there are mental health issues when you hear of fans acting in such a way Rolleyes
As for Fergies reaction: Unlike most in here I am a big admirer of what Fergie has done and achieved. I've actually met him and found him to be very warm and friendly...not the character you see on TV.
Sadly I have to admit that he does let himself down with his petulant behaviour. I can understand him being angry and pissed off last night but to send out Mike Phelan because he is too upset to talk to anyone post match? Not the behaviour I expect from the manager of one of the biggest teams in the world. He has an obligation to the fans, the board and the footballing world in general to act in a more professional manner. As a fan I rejoice when we have success, and yes get really pissed off when we lose...but you have to take that on the chin, accept the loss and hope we come back next time better and wiser. Something United have done in the EPL but can't seem to in Europe!
