Dunkirk
Based upon the true events of the evacuation of Allied solders from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, in the north of France, between 26th of May & 4th of June 1940 code named Operation Dynamo also unknown as the Miracle of Dunkirk.
Once again Chris Nolan knocks out another fantastic film not only did he produce the film along side his wife Emma Thomas but he wrote and directed the movie.
The film is from told from three different perspectives, land, sea and by air. Right from the start of the film it kicks off and from then on it's a compelling and tense the flow of the film is a little different but without spoiling too much it doesn't go from A to B to C you'll see what I mean when guy watch it. The special effects where great and there was a lot of emphasis on practical effects which really enhance the realism of the movie.
It' doesn't focus on gory or the horror of war but what it does do is so the bravery of the soldiers and normal working class men called upon to use there boats to rescue them.
Not only is the film shocking in places and unconventional it's the true test of survival to trying make it home and really makes you think hard about wars today and endless conflict and death and suffering.
Han Zimmers score is simply one of the best scores his ever done and fits the style of the film there nearest comparison would be the film score in The Dark Knight at start of that film with the robbery with the joker it's very similar but imagine that throughout the whole film but it's really tense.
The film is loud with sounds of gunfire bouncing around and spitfires if you can see it in IMAX.
There isn't really a lead in the movie and cast were fantastic Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, even Harry Styles is good, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy (Agent Carter), Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and my star of the film Tom Hardy.
It's gotta be up there in the oscars with best film, director and film score, up there with being one of Nolan's best films.
9.8/10.

Double Indemnity(1944)
A cynical noir drama from director Billy Wilder that set a standard in the genre. Starring Barbara Stanwyck as a cold, greedy and ruthless seductress who suckers Fred MacMurray into killing her husband under the false pretence that they will be together after she claims on her husband's life insurance policy.

Baby Driver(2017)
Won't do a plot synopsis but list some points
An intelligent, witty script, backed up by fine performances especially Lily James and Ansel Elgort ( their relationship is beautifully portrayed), Jamie Foxx(really unpleasant!) and Kevin Spacey.
Good use of flashbacks, really fills out the character and back story of Baby.
Amazing and varied soundtrack, covering Focus, The Damned,Queen and plenty of soul.
Action/ car chase junkies will be pleased but for me, although superbly filmed, the least interesting segments of the film.
Director Edgar Wright films it so inventively also with a wide knowledge of pop culture, this is certainly an American film unrecognisable from films such as Shaun Of The dead.
Also starring John Hamm,Eiza Gonzalez,C J Jones (a touching performance),Flea and Lanny Joon . 7.5/10

The Terror(1963)
A half decent but incredibly low budget variation of Edgar Allan Poe's The House Of Usher(which he would go onto make)directed by Roger Corman. It follows a French soldier who is separated from his unit when he pursues a woman to a castle near the Baltic Sea.The tremendous cast including Boris Karloff,Jack Nicholson,Sandra Knight and Dick Miller do their best to keep straight faces as they act in recycled sets from previous AIP productions.

Dunkirk(1958) A fine earlier version of this story, skilfully covering the stories of the combatants in France(John Miles,Robert Urquhart,Meredith Edwards), civilians in England(Bernard Lee,Richard Attenborough,Sean Barrett) and the 'high up' military. The crowd scenes are directed well, there are exciting battle skirmishes and the whole film has quite a pleasing cynical, critical air, and it also briefly finds time to cover the French and Belgian views.7.5/10
