So what was the deal with this anyway, anyone know?

Was it something they were doing for their own comedy show?
Was there anything actually funny about it or is 'alternative' comedy just a euphemism for 'unfunny'...

Yes it was a comedy sketch.

Comedy is subjective of course, so it may not have been to everyone's taste.
