I have just got my re - introduction to Wargames!! I have recently acquired "Across the Narva" wargames by Revolution Games, as a starting point for solitaire wargaming through recommendations from a friend, and with a view to playing together in future.

When I was younger I had a D day game which has been sadly lost.

Have any of you played wargames and which was your favourite?

Played Shellshock Nam 67 a good few years ago which was a classic third person shooter game set in Vietnam.

Very violent and gory game but loved it.

I've dabbled in a few solo games recently:

Phantom Leader Deluxe (DVG) - simple, enjoyable but kind of forgettable.

Cuba Libre (GMT) - I found the solo bots a bit of a nightmare to get to grips with and found that I didn't have much of a clue what to do as a player. I ended up just playing the four bots against each other which was a strangely enjoyable experience.

Enemy Coast Ahead - The Dambuster Raid (GMT) - This game really immerses you in the history of the operation so very enjoyable from that point of view. You have to love a game which has a "Transfer the barmaid" counter.

I think the history is the thing for me and not the gameplay so much.

That is the thing Dan, the games can present a few "what ifs" scenarios as much as the pc strategy games do.

When I played ECA the first couple of times I found myself trying to replicate the historical raid: 19 Lancasters, 3 waves, Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams, just to see if it played out the same. I had to force myself to try something different in later sessions.

How did you get on with the Narva game? Did you find that soloing a two player game was worthwhile in itself or something you would only do as prep for play against an opponent?
I'm planning on doing that myself with another game from Revolution Games, Battles of the Bulge: Celles which has a good reputation for breaking newcomers into board wargames and for solo play.

Next up though is Iwo: Bloodbath in the Bonins (Decision games) which will be my first hex map game but again designed for solo play.

^I hope to get a vassal session going sometime with a friend of mine so he can point out what I'm doing wrong!! P >Tongue But aside from that, I love the map and game it's very beautifully detailed!! The one thing I haven't done is clip the counters!! I've heard Konigsberg is very good by the same company. Then I might try something like Pavlov's House or maybe some ASL.

I'll bear Battle of the Bulge in mind for the future (as long as there is a "NUTS" chit involved)!! Tongue

ASL mate? Are you sure about that?

Its like when you hear that one of the babeshow lasses is thinking of doing hardcore. You think "I'm sure you'll be great at it but are you definitely 100% sure that's the route you want to go down because once you make that decision there's no turning back"

I confess that I use one of those counter cutters but the little blighter rives chunks off the sides of the counters about half the time. The sooner they all start producing Laser cut counters (like Pavlov's House - got it but not played it) the better.

RE: Have any of you played any wargames?
After three plays of the Iwo Jima game, in each of which I suffered a "defeat of war changing proportions" by failing to clear the island of it's defenders I'm booting it into touch. I just can't see how it is possible to win. The rulebook has the usual quota of errors, omissions and non sequiturs so I may have misunderstood it in some fundamental way or more than likely I just don't understand the correct strategy. It's my first hex and counter game so not surprising really.

Next up is my first attempt to solo a two player game. I've chosen Hell's Gate (VPG) designed by Philip Sabin of the War Studies Dept at Kings College London. Small map, about fifty units, 3 out of 9 for complexity, 7 out of 9 for solobility and it's rulebook wasn't written by Decision Games so hopefully a good intro to these games.
Prepping for this by reading "The Korsun Pocket - The Encirclement and Breakout of a German Army in the East, 1944" by Zetterling and Frankson.

Tried Call of Duty but couldn't quite grasp the concept and I think there was a glitch in it!
