RE: Train Journeys
my fave country in Europe to travel in is Croatia and my fav line in from Ouglin to Split i must have done the journey about 150 times northern half of the up in the high mountains southern half across the plains then down to the Mediterranean sea, if you went in winter you could start you journey going through snow 6 foot deep and 6 hours later be on swimming in the sea as its so warm, it has some of Europe last real old diesel trains on build in the USA in the 60's
other great lines in the former Yugoslavia are Jesenice to Villa Opocina through the Solvenia mountains, the main line through Montenegro got the highest railway bridges in the world, i always like travelling in Serbia before they got the new trains a couple of years ago, it was always so mad no train in the county ran lass than an hour late,
staying in the south, in Turkey they is a lot of really nice lines in the east, the line from Sivas the old capital of Turkey 800 km east to Kars was amazing was mostly stone desert but full of colour, i usual would get off at Erzurum about 400km into the journey was a big town with nothing around it for a 100km we got treated like kings as no one from Europe ever went there,
Malatya to Tatvan is also a very beautiful journey all rivers and lakes up and down mountains as well, lake Van has a train ferry that takes u to Iran,
for interesting head from Malatya to Batman its through proper desert and its the kurdish part of Turkey its totally different to the rest of the country you see tanks on the streets as they dont like the Turkish but they love the British, i once nearly got arrested by the Turkish secerat police in Biyarbakir the other kurdish city as didnt realise there had been a hugh riot there the day before and everything was locked down by the army,
heading north i love traveling in Czech as its got great trains and beer every where, it has a railway system like the uk in the 50's its what our one would be like today if beeching had not happened,
spent a lot of time in germany lived going to Munchen in the south in winter and doing the trains in th snow very nice, in the north i like the line from Hamburg to Westerland its really intersting line huge bridges over ship rivers, and westerland is a island
the most pretty lines are in the nordic countries though,
Sweden id not at interesting as its flat and all forest but it dose have one good line and its one of the most senic i have travelled the line to the far north to Narvik in Norway a lot of it is in the arctic circle, i went in june when it was daylight 24 hours a day, but the snow still had not melted yet, a true wilderness then do the connecting bus from Narvik to Fauske this was mindblowing the most beautiful journy i have ever done, all the lines in Norway are nice,
i like Finland best the line from Tampere to Pieksamaki its just like going through the Scottish west highlands, the line from Pieksamaki to Oulu is amazing its up through the middle of the county it goes over unspolt artic tundra and lots of lakes,
the line from Oulu up into the artic to Kolari is very intersting,
currently walking on the Sunny side of the street
