Denmark has been gently nudging them toward independence for decades, to the point where they have near total autonomy over local affairs. But they aren’t racing for independence because about a third of GDP is made up of Danish subsidies.

It’s essentially a glacier with a bit of grass that is not viable as a country.

I can only guess why Trump even wants it:

1. Legitimate security concerns? Its location relative to Russia and/or the fact that it has large uranium deposits?

2. The “hope value” of whatever is in the ground? But it certainly has no value today. It’s like the tar sands in Northern Canada. Canadians knew for generations that there were vast oil deposits there, but it was all kind of pointless until the price of oil and new technologies made it economically feasible to extract and refine it.

3. Ego? … “But Andrew Johnson got to buy Alaska! Dwight Eisenhower got to make Hawaii a state! … Whahhh, why can’t I buy Greenland!!??”

4. [insert conspiracy theory here]? Something Steven Bannon and the NSA aren’t telling us.

As the Ice melts due to global warming (which Trump denied exists) the valuable rare earth minerals under the glaciers on Greenland become more accessible. The sea ice melting has also increased the number of ships which can traverse the northern route past Greenland so shipping routes are opening up with the opportunity for ports trade. Its a pure attempt to bribe/threaten Greenland and Denmark so the US becomes richer.

Much the same applies to his pitch for Canada although as one Democratic congressman has pointed out Canada would have around the same Electoral College votes as California and would probably vote the same way. That would mean no Republican would ever get elected as President

Trumps already buying up Scotland. One golf course at a time.

Would the world be in a far better place if the business empires of Trump. Musk & Zuckerberg suddenly collapsed within a single day? Is that what it would take to shut Musk up for good?

The speaker of the House announced the change yesterday. During the inauguration the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff, afterwards the flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter

I imagine the flag is lowered at half mast at the US embasssy here right, - and they will do the same thing Monday?
