Amazing Story of a Frozen River
Back to Hokkaido, this time to consider the Teshio River, the 4th longest in Japan, and one of those that gets so cold that people can walk on its surface safely, and even have competitions for people to guess when the ice will break in the spring. Then in 2022, calamity as global warming meant an early thaw about a month before usual, and even before they could start the competition (which was cancelled). Also bad news for the salmon in the river whose journey depended on the melting ice. Luckily things got cold again after a few days, and the full thaw didn't come until later, which was good for the salmon. But yet another sign of the interconnected problems that global warming are causing.
