Bigguy's absolutely right regards how difficult it is to determine the world's best players, be it currently or historically speaking.

The Formula1 example is a good one because not only do different eras have to be taken into consideration, but different levels of technology and rule changes also have to be accounted for.

In football it becomes even more complicated as there are a number of different positions to consider. Whilst goalkeepers are never considered to be the best footballer in the world, by what rules is it decided that Lionel Messi for example is a better forward than so-and-so is a better goalkeeper or defeneder or defensive midfielder in relation to his peers? It's always a given that the 'world's best player' tag is afforded to a forward or creative midfielder, as these are the glamorous positions where the matchwinners ply their trade, hence why the likes of Messi and Ronaldo attract most of the plaudits.

lindor, dont forget that the ball they with has changed over the over the years, today's ball is plastic, lighter and moves more in the air than the ball back in 50's, 60's and 70's where when it got wet it would have knocked you out if you headed becauase it soak up the water. in '66 world cup portugal v brazil, portugal kicked pele off the park, in today's game if that happen those that were doing the kicking would get booked or sent off, the player that got kicked would roll on the fainting injury to get that player sent off and a free kick or penalty. the problem is with the so called "worlds greatest" people only talk about players that play in europe or on tv at world cups, there could be a player in asia that is better than messi, rooney etc but becuase football from that region does not exposed to europe and the rest of world they miss out, apart from some south african, ghanian and spainish players, for me the japanese team were the most underrated team in the world cup in 2010, honda could play the prem league easily.

AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso head butted Spurs assistant coach Joe Jordan after the UEFA Champions League tie last night.

He wouldn't have done that 20 years ago when Joe was in the Leeds and Scotland teams. Joe would have pulled his head off.

RE: Football Banter
Absolutely right Bigguy! There are so many differences between today and yesteryear that it'd take some souped-up computer to determine the world's best-ever player - and even then it'd probably get it wrongWink!

Dead right about the different ball; the ones they use now are specifically developed and doctored so as to create greater movement and speed, which makes some players look better than their forefathers. It's the same with the leniency/strictness of referees and yes, Pele was kicked out of 1966 in a way that would never have happened today.

Many other factors also contribute to muddle the waters even more; for example, today's footballers live life coccooned in a celebrity bubble and have far too much money and time on their hands, which can lead to many potentially damaging temptations, resulting in loss of form, fitness, mind etc. You mentioned earlier that Messi seems to be the one truly world-class star of today who manages to stay level-headed and unaffected by his status. It would be very interesting to see how the likes of Pele, Maradona and George Best might have coped if they'd played in today's celebrity-obsessed society - two of them couldn't really handle it in their days could they?

Totally agree with you regards Japan; they were actually my favourite team to watch in South Africa last Summer besides Germany. Japan went into the World Cup free from expectation and the pressures that brings with it and played some wonderfully entertaining football, and with a refreshing smile on their faces as wellSmile! I'm surprised that the likes of Honda aren't being sought by the bigger clubs across Europe!

If you're going to headbutt someone then I think Joe Jordan would be way down the list, even if he is 59 years
old Tongue Lol Joe didn't even flinch.
I was going to post a Vid from Youtube but they've been taken down citing a copyright claim from Uefa.

Gareth Southgate tweeted
"Lesson from Joe Jordan to modern players- not essential to collapse when headbutted... "

btw Flamini's tackle on Corluka should have received a red card.

Great performance (and result) by the 'mighty' Spurs Big Grin

if you have seen the ending the of motd2 on sunday then thats now should get sent off, if you are going fight throw a good hook at the player you want to hit and a deserved red card and ban. no pussy footing about should a good scrap if youing to go no falling down like you have been hit by the dc sniper. pre prem league players were the hardest of them all, also 50 - 70's brazilian players were hard, playing on streets with street rules, learning to defend your self by trying to break the other players legs in order to keep the ball. even the best brazilian players from that era knew how look after themselves unlike their current counterparts who dive, looking to get freekicks and penalties, which in brazilian football the refs pander to the players so when they come over to epl they get a huge culture shock in refing terms.
