I was trying to access the "last post" in a thread yesterday when it was running slow.

thats purely down to the sites optimization admin comes on and sorts the site at 7-8am this basically defragments the forum. depending on what the site runs on will depend on how good this process is. from personal experience i found mysql to be the best. but really the differences are minimal when it comes to the re ordering of the site.

he could try the am/pm approach and see if that alleviates the problem but its unlikely to show any real difference. due to the forums shear size.

Im fucking fed up of this forum...When are you going to put into place a system that restricts the guests
browsing the site during busy times?

The forum has sped up a bit now..i kept getting 503 errors and it was taking in some cases up to 4 minutes to load a page!!!


Update..just took 2 mins 15 secs to send this message (the first time)

Yes I've just done a few checks and the speed is very variable at the moment. It's really very up and down. I'll work with the host to see what solution we can find.

The forum is almost unusable for me tonight. It's like trying to reason with a drunk child.

im guessing you have a wireless router? on a home network?
as your struggling out the gate. your ping is high as soon as you hit your modem so everything else after is affected. if you take 100 points off your initial ping and apply it to the rest of your hops your will see they are all withing range of what they should be. so in this case its either a bad wireless connection or sum1 else is on your network or its badly optimized. what o.s. you using? if its xp then you will need to get an optimization tool as vista and win 7 will automatically optimize your line reasonably well.

I'll have to take your word regarding the figures - they mean absolutely nothing to me.

My router isn't in wireless mode, it's cable connected (I don't trust the security of wireless systems) and there's only one pc connected.

My OS is XP SP3.

If the problem is at my end I still don't understand why only this site is affected (edit: or why it should vary according to the time of day). I have no problems anywhere else.

if you can connect directly to the modem and cut the router out of the equation. if you dont run a home network or you have nothing else that needs the net then you dont need it at all. just connect the Ethernet from your pc into where the router was and then reinstall your Ethernet drivers.
