M.A.S.K

Produced by DIC Audiovisual and animated by Japanese studio KK DiC,M.A.S.K(Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand)was launched by Kenner as a toyline in 1985.Cynics would say that the animated series was simply a glorified advert for the toys(later they would be proved rightSmile)but initially it was a smartly made morality tale with each episode ending with some kind of safety advice for children.
As a kid this probably seemed to be around for longer than it actually was, only 75 episodes were made over two seasons with the first one featuring team M.A.S.K,led by Matt Tracker countering the terrorist acts of Miles Mayhem and his organisation V.E.N.O.M(Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem)using seemingly normal vehicles that, with the push of a button converted to impressive attack modules. Each driver also wore a mask that could project some kind of special power.
After the first season, the tone changed and the storylines revolved around VENOM attempting to obtain money by sabotaging or rigging various car racing events rather than the stealing of historical artifacts and terror etc but always thwarted by the good guys each time obviously.Despite syndication no more episodes were produced after the "racing series" and M.A.S.K faded out.A couple of video games and some decent comics came out but by the end of the 80s it was history and the next fad took over.
I have great memories of watching this as a child and I even bought the region 1 DVDs and most of the first series holds up but it never captured the imagination quite like The Transformers did.Did any of you guys like it or was it something that passed you by completely?

Good man rpj316 excellent stuff there-I think this bypassed me back then (Kommand with K really?) Big Grin It does sound like another cartoon series I downloaded from You tube a few years ago called Pole Position - this was in the vein of Devlin, the stunt motorcyclist. It concerned two special cars Rudy and Wheels owned by a brother-and-sister stunt team and they had adventures together as they were actually secret agents with their uncle the head of it.

By special request(as I wasn't going to do this until the weekend) here is the next in-depth look at a cartoon.

Help! It's the Hair Bear Bunch! which you might remember the back end of the 70's. This concerned three oddball bears that lived in a cave in the Wonderland Zoo. Hair, Square and Bubi. They looked like they lived in just an ordinary cave but a pull of a lever or stepping on a stone revealed secret and hidden items like a televison or three comfortable beds, a fridge and other clever devices. Every night the three bears would try to break out of the Zoo to experience life outside the Zoo. Trying desperately to stop them was the Zoo Keeper, Mr Eustice P. Peevly and his dumb assistant Lionel Botch(Butch) whose endeavours to stop the bears usually end in disaster. To aid their escape sometimes Square Bear(who is always hungry) produces out of nowhere an invisible motorcycle. Hair is the leader of the pack with unkempt, frizzy hair to match and concocts the schemes(a bit like Phil Silvers' Bilko-more about that later) He has the gift of the gab and runs rings around Peevely and Butch. Square is a spaced out type bear who doesn't always grasp the situation. Bubi is the hilarious little bear who talks the biggest load of nonsense that only the other two seem to understand(although in some episodes it appears Peevly does get some of it) "hey you grils, what the clyde tried to say" is one of his stock phrases - some of it is hilarious especially when he is trying to explain something to Peevely, who really has no clue what he is on about-and neither do we!

Hair, Square and Bubi are helped occasionally by the rest of the zoo animals who admire his audacity and the elaborate escapes planned and sometimes are instrumental in helping set them up. No matter what he tries to do Peevely is never quite able to catch them in the act or see what really goes on in the 'austere' cave.

The series features the following five main characters throughout its run:

Daws Butler as Hair Bear.
Paul Winchell as Bubi Bear.
Bill Callaway as Square Bear.
John Stephenson as Mr. Peevly, the zookeeper at Wonderland Zoo.
Joe E. Ross as Lionel Botch.

I mentioned Phil Silvers' Sgt Ernest Bilko earlier well Joe E Ross who plays Botch also played Master Sgt Rupert Ritzik in that series forever being scammed. He had the perfect voice for Botch.

Lyrics to the tune of the title:

In the Wonderland Zoo, we're the certain bears who,
stay at home every night, never quarrel or fight,
AW, WE DON'T EVEN BITE!!!

SO DON'T YELL HELP! HELP!
Here come the bears,

HELP! HELP! here come the bears,
HELP! HELP! here come the bears,

LET'S SPLIT!!! HELP!
IT'S THE HAIR BEAR BUNCH!!

RE: THE Cartoon/Animation thread (Discussion)
We all know that animation has been used in live-action films but the very first ones were made using two well-known cartoon characters Tom and Jerry. The first was in the 1950's in a film called Dangerous When Wet with swimming legend and actress, Esther Williams, who swam with Tom in a sequence. The second was Anchor's Away(Aweigh) with Gene Kelly, the legendary actor/dancer in a terrific sequence with Jerry the mouse who was a king of somewhere(I forget where) and Kelly had this clever idea to choreograph a dance routine with Jerry.
