all very true. Maybe the standards have dropped since theY made drug testing stricter. Maybe to be considered an all time great you must break the world record as well as win global titles. Maybe that's why the complete reverse of Mo Farah would also not be considered all time greats. Ron Clarke had multiple world records yet never won the Olympics, same as Jim Ryan and David Bedford. They could never really be considered one of the trully great since they never won a global title.

RE: Athletics
paula radcliffe is an example of this she is certainly the best women distance runner we've ever had yet Titles in europeans, worlds and commonwealths and many marathon winners and still holds the marathon world record yet as she hasnt won an olympic medal she is not Dame Paula radcliffe

but would say as she has won commonwealth medals are just as valid as Olympic golds because all of the same competitors were in the same race as the olympics

In regard to Radcliffe she was also up against the cheating Chinese. she was morally a good medalist I suppose. Still think you have to win a global title. Backley beat all the top javelin throwers in the euopeans but never won a global title. Therefore was never seen as a true great even though his main rival was a euopean Selenzy. That's why Coe Ovett Cram Thompson and Gunnell were seen as true all time greats. They all won global titles and broke world records in their time.

RE: Athletics
It not just athletics Mark cavendish will never be compared greater than Bradley wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy until he wins an olympic medal in Rio. even though he has won numerous world titles and 26 stage wins in the Tour de france 3rd all time

Could not agree more. Some of the all blacks rugby teams especially the 95 team basically broke all records, beat all comers home and Away but failed to win the world cup so will never be rated with the very best even though they revolutionised the way rugby was played. Same with the Dutch football teams of the 70s and the Hungarian football teams of the 50s.
I remember Cavendish was seen as being the dead cert for gold in the road race at the 2012 Olympics. Went wrong somewhat.

I Remember Lendl and Roswell winning all there is to win at tennis except Wimbledon and thus having their greatness overlooked. Sport can be a cruel business at times.

She has always been an advocate of blood testing. I would be very surprised if it were true. If they are not willing to name names than That allegation should be taken with a pinch of salt. They could have been referring to Dame Kelly Holmes for all we know. The source should either be brave and reveal who they meant or keep quite till they can produce evidence.

It went wrong in 2012 because the year before in the world championships the GB team basically destroyed the field with 7 team members and the UCI changed the rules so that only 5 men from each country could compete

and the fact the road race was the Saturday after the sunday finish to the TDF where the majority of the GB team including cavandish were in action in fact cavandish won the last stage with bradley wiggins actually leading him into the last corner

gonna have to see what he does about rio i know he is doing track cycling to get qualifying points but he isnt guarenteed a place. not sure if the course will be a sprint stage got a feeling that they will try and end the stage on top of the mountain where christ the redeemer is if thats the case then it will be more a climber stage where froome could be the better bet for a medal

RE: Athletics
Have they built a complete new stadium for the Olympics or did they alter one of the stadiums for last summer's World cup?

As for Cavendish I'd love to see him in Rio but it depends on how long he has to get enough points to qualify

British finished fourth overall in championship medal table with the 4 x 400 relay trams both getting bronze but I did honestly think Rooney hadn't got it until I saw the slow down on the replay that was the thinnest of margins!! Smile
I hope we can use the Rio games a a good spring board for the London world championships in 2017 but I do hope Mo will be in London in 2017

Laura Muir has smashed the British 1500m record with a 2016 world lead time of 3 minutes 55.22 seconds to win the Diamond League race in Paris beating Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon into second place to boot.
What a performance.
