RE: THE Cartoon/Animation thread (Discussion)
If this thread hits 50 posts I might entertain the idea of doing an A-Z on here. Basically I will take ONE cartoon or animated series and concentrate on it with any trivia or information I can add(and you can add to it too) Hopefully it will become a repository of the best stuff around mostly from the past. Yeah I agree it does age us but the mere fact that we remember all these things shows how much it affected our memories.

I also mentioned Other in the poll. I was referring to another cartoon maker called Terrytoons which produced stuff like Astronut, Deputy Dawg and here's one I bet you don't remember, Dodo, the Kid from Outer Space(which had a really catchy tune)

Definitely one from the other category,Gertie the Dinosaur(1914)from Winsor McCay.Over one hundred years old and it still retains all of its charm.Famous for being the first piece of animation to feautue a dinosaur and the first to use the keyframe technique. It was preserved by the U.S Library of Congress Nation Film Registry in 1991.

It might seem I am against Walt Disney calling it twee and too safe but there are several examples of their stuff that is good and like all young children I was taken to see the usual things like Snow White, Bambi, 101 Dalmations, The Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, in fact all the classics both animated and live-action/animation such as Pete's Dragon(and the remake), although I hated the Herbie films and films like that where too much slapstick ruined the film for me. I did love TRON when it first came out and the remake some years ago, this was light years ahead of things ever done by Disney. I also remember Disney Time being shown at Easter, Bank Holidays, Christmas etc which was always introduced by a popular presenter like Philip Schofield. Later Disney films have been very good and of course Disney also own the MARVEL franchise so those films have been very good too.

One of the best Disney cartoons of recent times, well I say recent, late 80's was their interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, Basil the Great Mouse Detective. Some of the accents are typical of Americans who just can't do them, but Basil was played by Barrie Ingham a Brit who went 'across the pond' and did rather well in the USA. Vincent Price was brilliant as the main villain, Rattigan(a sort of rattish Moriarty) who tries to thwart Basil and to take over the Royal Family. Another which I remember going to see at the then Disney Cinema in St Martin's Lane was 'The Rescuers' about two mice who are part of the Rescue Aid Society who are hired to look for a missing child, Penny. They end up in a bayou and meet a load of backwoods characters. Probably the best character was the albatross who flies them there. Some good songs in it, and the voices of Bernard-(American comedian,Bob Newhart, and Bianca Eva Gabor (Zsa Zsa's sexier sister) It was brought back later as 'The Rescuers-Down Under'

I emailed the website(mentioned before) twice and offered them a copy of 'The Phantom Tolbooth' which centres on a bored schoolboy who is vistd by a strange parcel which turns out to be a portal into a strange land. Live-action and animation from Chuck Jones, it quite brilliantly made and teaches kids several morals. I've not heard back from them although I did get a small reply from the first email I sent.

As Financial Domination continues to grow, less enthusiasm is required when putting on a show.

Well it is animation-stop motion. Shane Rimmer was very good as Dick Spanner and it was very short episodes on Network Seven when it went out on Channel 4 in the 90's. A lot of good humour and sight gags. Great to see that after all these years.

Now this is a fascinating bit of trivia:
The voice of BAMBI went on to becoming a decorated War Hero.

Donnie Dunagan spent 25 years in the Marines. He was a decorated Vietnam War veteran who rose up the ranks quickly—13 promotions in 21 years, as he recalls—and held such honors as being the youngest ever drill instructor and receiving a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for his service. And when he retired as a Major in 1977, he was finally able to talk about a little secret he'd kept from his colleagues all those years: Long before he was barking orders at new recruits, they'd all definitely heard his voice before, as children, when he was far less menacing. Major Dunagan was the voice of Bambi.
