New Ofcom Rules

Interesting article I've read coming from UK managing director Jeremy Yates of Playboy TV, could this be a glimmer of hope that somebody is prepared to take the powers that be at Ofcom into changing the current rules

Nice find, SB! They're only words, of course, and there's nothing to say he's going to follow them up in any way, but as you say, great to hear someone on our side speaking out publicly.

Very interesting. Playboy seems to want to encrypt everything (well during the day for adult content at least). I would still hold that a pin number on the babechannels, even if for no money, would place a psychological hurdle in the way for casual viewers. I think it would mean a proportion of men in years to come down the line would never get around to see the channels in the first place. I'd say alot of people only watch when something catches their eye first.

I agree. Having to enter your PIN for every single babe channel is an absolute non-starter as far as I'm concerned. I generally start at 967 and flick down through the channels. When I reach 902 I then flick back up to check there's still nothing happening and if not I go watch something else for a few hours before repeating my 'check'. No way am I doing that if I have to enter my PIN for every channel.

I'm sure however, that technology allows for ALL the adult channels to be unlocked with a single PIN entry.

It's worth mentioning that we all ready have this, of course. It's under Services in the Sky menu and is called Parental Control, but the oh-so concerned parents out there obviously don't have the intelligence or understanding to do this. I mean come on, they have to press at least five different buttons to block the adult channels. Far too complicated.

I've allways maintained that Ofcom rather than taking complaints on against the babe channels should instead simply guide the complainer through on how to block them and then throw the complaint out of the window as the Adult Section EPG is more than adequately protected, why complicate the easy procedures that are allready in place, it's so easy to change the pin number too as you can do that as many times as you wish, so it's up to the grown up's to protect the minors not Ofcom, I've personally had it with this nanny fucking police mentality

That would certainly help lessen the impact, but even then I suspect they would lose maybe 10-20% of viewers overnight (and maybe approaching that much revenue? although the regular callers would subscribe pronto) but then the numbers would lessen ever after as the hurdle affects potential new viewers. Good find Scottish. Playboy seems fiffed by having the register Demand Adult and Climax 3 under AVOD rules. They can see the next step - Ofcom for the internet.

Its about time Playboty (playbooty? bit Freudian) as one of the biggest operators grew a backbone and took Ofcom though the Courts. They didnt get off the ground by accepting established legal practice, they fought for the right to publish. It not that long ago that Playboy used to broadcast a reality show unencrypted. It showed people having real oral and vaginal sex, in long shot and without genitals visible. They argued it was editorially justified. Its even mentioned as a sample clip in the survey Roquentin found (in another thread). But they were fined, after many arguments, and since then their strong stuff has all been encrypted. Perhaps they felt they could not win, but Ofcom have tightened up every year and Playboy must be losing income at the same time that their compliance costs rise.

Typing in a PIN every time you change channel would be a major turn off. But one PIN a night would be feasible. Even better to have one PIN for family viewing (set it at 12, 15, 18 depending on the kids ages), another for explicit sex, and a third one for account management. Too many? But right now if you have a 20 year old and a 15 year old, and you allow your older one to use your PIN you are also allowing them to order pay-per-view boxing matches, first run films, buy new packages, etc. I might let a family member have the key to the drinks cupboard, but I wouldnt let them have my credit card PIN. Thats how Sky works. It could change.

AND if Ofcom were serious about protecting adults from offence it would insist Sky boxes were shipped with the Adult section switched off.

Well it's about bloody time someone as Powerful in the Adult Industry as Playboy has decided to take Ofcom on if what I've read on the forums are correct. All of us have posted in one form or another about the possibility of a SECURE PIN number.
So the question we all ask ourselves is when is Playboy going to start to get the Ball moving? Well if the chief executives at Playboy have seen there UK income getting smaller and smaller every year due to Ofcom then i think they'll move pretty quick to stop this once and for all. Plus the rumour mill will be rife in the offices at Ofcom, can you imagine the panic
If the rumours are correct then i think its only a matter of time will,when things will finally start to turn our way at long last
